Being Jewish at Christmas
Sunday, December 13, 2009
The Teacher asked young Patrick Murphy:  "What do you do at Christmas time?

Patrick addressed the class:  "Well Ms. Jones, me and my twelve brothers and sisters go to midnight mass and we sing hymns; then we come home very late and we put mince pies by the back door and hang up our stockings.  Then all excited, we go to bed and wait for Father Christmas to come with all our toys.

"Very nice Patrick," she said.  "Now Jimmy Brown, what do you do at Christmas?"

Well, Ms. Jones, me and my sister also go to church with Mom and Dad and we sing carols and we get home ever so late..  We put cookies and milk by the chimney and we hang up our stockings..  We hardly sleep, waiting for Santa Claus to bring our presents.

Realizing there was a Jewish boy in the class and not wanting to leave him out of the discussion, she asked, "Now, Isaac Cohen, what do you do at Christmas?"

Isaac said, "Well, it's the same thing every year.... Dad comes home from the office.  We all pile into the Rolls Royce; then we drive to Dad's toy factory.  When we get inside, we look at all the empty shelves... And begin to sing: "What A Friend We Have In Jesus." Then we all go to the Bahamas ."

Walter Reed Hospital CANNOT accept your cards
Sunday, December 6, 2009

For the last few years, I've received countless emails encouraging me to send cards to "A Recovering American Soldier" at the Walter Reed Army Medical Hospital.

While the idea is wonderful, you will be wasting your money and efforts.  The hospital cannot accept these cards because of security issues.  Please look at the following, taken directly from Walter Reed's website (and you can also verify this on Snopes.com).

Release No. 09-46

Date: Nov. 30, 2009

For Immediate Release

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Walter Reed Army Medical Center officials want to remind the public of an incorrect holiday e-mail asking recipients to send cards, letters and packages to recovering Soldiers here. The e-mail suggests recipients to send Christmas cards to “A Recovering American Soldier,” and lists a Walter Reed, Washington, D.C., address.

All military installations, not just Walter Reed, cannot accept these packages in support of the decision by then Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Transportation Policy in 2001. This decision was made to ensure the safety and well being of patients and staff at medical centers throughout the Department of Defense.

In addition, the U.S. Postal Service is no longer accepting "Any Service Member" or "A Recovering American Soldier" letters or packages. Mail to "Any Service Member" that is deposited into a collection box will not be delivered.

U.S. Postal Service link:

http://www.usps.com/supportingourtroops/otherways.htm

There is still time to send holiday mail to the American Red Cross’ Holiday for Heroes campaign. The Red Cross has established a P.O. Box to receive cards and letters for distribution to wounded warriors at Walter Reed but to other military hospitals and installations across the globe. All letters and cards must be received by Dec. 7 to ensure delivery by Christmas. The address is:

Holiday Mail for Heroes

P.O. Box 5456

Capitol Heights, MD 20791-5456

Whether you want to send a care package to a servicemember, write an email or letter, donate airline miles to help reunite returning military men and women with their families, support scholarship funds or send support to wounded servicemembers through dozens of great organizations that supports wounded warriors and their families every day.

Groups or individuals wishing to send calling cards or gift cards/certificates should go to www.aafes.com scroll down to AAFES Community Center‛ and click on Help Our Troops Call Home or Gift Cards/Certificates for Our Troops‛ in order to send such items.

There are other ways to show support for troops past and present:

  • Visit Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals and nursing homes
  • Volunteer your services to honor veterans who served in past conflicts
  • Attend a “Welcome Home Hero” ceremony at your local airport
  • Contact local National Guard armories and Reserve Centers to find out if cards and letters of support for recently returned or soon-to-deploy troops can be sent
  • Support your local veterans and military support organizations such as the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars and
  • Fly the American Flag at your residence or business

About Walter Reed Health Care System "Home of Warrior Care"

We all want to show our support for troops, and alternative method for sending appreciation to hospitalized soldiers are suggested in the news release from the hospital.

If you are interested in doing something for the troops who are not hospitalized, I am fond of an organization called "Treats for Troops" (you can look them up online) which allows you to purchase gift packages and have them sent to a designated soldier or a random one if you so choose.  Gifts can range from small candy gifts, to phone cards allowing them to call home, to personal care items such as wet body wash cloths and whatnot for those unable to get to a bath or shower.  I can personally attest to the legitimacy of this site, as I have purchased packages for a US Navy sailor named Tamara who has emailed me back her appreciation.

Bless you all for wanting to share your love with those in our military.

2 Dogs 2000 Miles
Thursday, December 3, 2009
This afternoon, on  my lunch break I drove down US 130 in Pennsauken, New Jersey to get gas in my car, and as I drove I saw him.  This man, who I've heard about on the news, is named Luke Robinson, and he has dedicated himself to finding a cure for canine cancer.  He lost one of his beloved Great Pyrenees dogs to cancer, and he decided to take his two remaining dogs on a trek from "Austin to Boston" to raise awareness of it.  He stops along the way, walking 8-10 miles a day and he is making steady progress.  I pulled over and chatted with him very briefly, and found him to be very friendly and charming.  He declined any assistance I could give him, and continued  on his way.  His dogs are so sweet, absolutely beautiful big white furballs.

I'm going to add a little of his story here, taken from his website.  Please join me in wishing him good luck on his journey!

WHY WE ARE  WALKING ACROSS THE COUNTRY

In 2004 my dog, Malcolm was diagnosed with bone cancer. Amputation and chemotherapy only slowed its progression and the cancer ultimately metastasized to his lungs. After almost a two year battle, he was given rest.

Malcolm was only six when diagnosed and no one could tell me why or how he got this horrible disease. Dogs are living longer these days, said some. It's genetics, said others. Or his diet. Perhaps pesticides or administering multiple vaccinations at once.

We've known about cancer for over half a century and that we still don't know these answers was unacceptable to me. And so I sold my truck, put my stuff in storage,&set out on the road with a pack on my back, my boys, Hudson and Murphy, at my side, and a simple belief.

We can discover the causes of canine cancer.

puppy up!

Hudson, Murphy, and Luke

Pumpkin Pie Martini
Sunday, November 22, 2009
I was reading a local newspaper and saw an ad for a brand of vodka and it featured this yummy-sounding recipe, which I MUST try!!

Pumpkin Pie Martini

ice cubes
2 oz. Three Olives Vanilla Vodka
2 oz. Cream de Cacao
1/4 cup heavy cream
1 tsp. pumpkin pie spice
Whipped Cream for garnish

Fill a cocktail shaker half full with ice cubes.  Add everything except the whipped cream, and shake well, then strain into martini glasses.  Garnish with the whipped cream.

Does this sound awesome or what???

Happy and blessed Thanksgiving to all my friends here at SexyAds!
