I got back here this morning after a crazy weekend that presented some challenges and I think I handled all of them well. I'll blog about that later.
Do Dah arrived back here around 1PM and seemed happy to see me. I was VERY happy to see him!
I was told he had a great weekend and they enjoyed having him.
He has become a regular squwak box...chatters away and sits up on my shoulder and pulls at my hair.
He is still getting flying down and seems to be getting the hang of it.
I found out today we are going to Gloucester July 1-15 so lets see how he is adjusting by then.
He is bright, inquisitive, and funny.
Its hard to believe this is the same bird a month later.

So, Win forgot to pick him up last night which I knew he would, and his wife called and said she will pick up Do Dah this morning when I am leaving here.
We talked a bit about them taking over she said she works 4-5 days a week so isnt at home. Win is busy all the time.
So I will just play it as it goes. He can stay here thats no problem, its Josie and her dementia that Im concerned about.
Do Dah spent the day yesterday trying to refine his flying, he is getting better at it. He still wants to sit on top of my head most of the time.
I have him eating mostly worms and crickets, cut up apple, blackberries and blueberries and tried out peas, carrots and corn. He likes them.
I fixed up a cage for him to sleep in at night and put gravel on the floor I think they need that to help with digestion.
So Im off to Albany, NY tonight and will be back on monday night so I will check in on tuesday and let you know how we did with our first separation. Lol!

The honeymoon is over. Tonight he chose to fly up on the pinecones on the bookshelf and go to sleep up there! He doesnt want to sleep with me anymore!  He isnt the first one to come to that conclusion...
Seriously this shows me he knows what to do and when. This is good! Today I put down a shallow plate of water and splashed my fingers in it, then placed him in it. In just a few seconds time he was splashing water all over and having fun. He also drank it for the first time. That was a relief.
I stepped up giving him more live worms and crickets today and finely diced carrots, apples and blueberries. He is also picking up food on his own. Im still giving him some of the moistend kitty chow with the hard boiled egg, shell included and baby food vegetables with chicken.
Im leaving for Albany NY on saturday night, and return on monday night and Josies daughter in law is going to be watching him. She raised a robin so she's had some experience. Now that he is showing more independence I feel better about leaving him.
Im thinking of asking them if they'd take over from here. They have a place down in Big Sur.
Its been a little bit of a problem with Josie since the bird has been more active. She wants to be helpful but her dementia has its problems as she wants to bring branches into the house for him to sit on and have mealworms all over the floor for him. It got to where I had to bring him upstairs to my room... out of sight out of mind.
Today I went in the kitchen and found her over the sink with the plastic box of live crickets in her hands. "What are you doing Josie?" I asked her. "Giving them a drink of water." She had drowned them. My fault, I should not have left them there. So far she hasnt gotten into the mealworms and wax worms that are in the fridge.
Here he is tonight in his sleeping spot he found. This may be his last night with me, they are picking him up tommorow night.
I love him so much... it kinda stings to think of letting him go. I have to do what is right for him.

Today was amazing, he began trying his wings... he did pretty good. He is starting to pick up mealworms on his own... he had his first cricket's.
I snapped this picture tonite and I dont know who is smiling bigger, him or me.

I cant believe it was three weeks yesterday I found him on the ground.
Today he is hopping up on the side of the basket and I put a long stick for him to perch on.
I did put him down on the floor and he looked around and seemed a bit overwhelmed and hopped in between my legs.
Im not trying to push him, Im letting him explore at his own pace.
He is starting to pick at the food that I have on the end of the chopstick I feed him with, but still opens his mouth and wants to be fed.
I seem to be learning its okay to allow him his space to grow, and that I dont have to know everything and I cant fix everything.
