Why not just leave?
Thursday, September 1, 2011
The question most often asked of persons who seek an adjunct to a relationship situation is, "why not just leave and start anew with someone else?". In other words, why be a philanderer? The reasons are many, and the facile answer is "it is my business and no one elses".  This answer is a poor one, a passive-aggressive one, and one which fails to address the complexity of the desire to enhance one's situation.

I am still, at the age of 52, vital and interested in passion and intimacy. Lest the reader think that this means I want to get laid, rest assured that it does, but it means a lot more than that. It means that I still have a lot to offer, and that the attributes I have to offer are no longer needed here at home. Has this been discussed? Yes, to a fare-thee-well. Then why not just leave?

The answer is simple: I owe her a lot, and the repayment of a debt is quite important. Debts take many forms, and this begs the further question: do not  owe her my loyalty? This complex question also has a simple answer: yes, to a large extent, but not completely, and not in every way.
